Conversation with Nicole Abbott, MURP 2026

How was your Rowan experience?

Nicole: My time at Rowan has been a wild ride! I started out as an Anthropology major with a minor in Law and Justice in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In my sophomore year, I had to take a GIS class for science credits, and my entire world changed. I added GIS as a second major in the fall of my junior year; I became the first GIS student accepted into Rowan’s Masters of Urban and Regional Planning program the very next semester; finally, the fall of my senior year, I added Geography on as my third major. I have an insatiable appetite for knowledge, and I believe my academic career reflects that. Throughout my five years here, I have had the most wonderful experiences—from working abroad to making connections that will last a lifetime. I wouldn’t trade my time at Rowan for the world.

What was your experience with the Community Planning + Visualization Lab?

Nicole: I started in the lab as a graduate research assistant in Fall 2025, my last year of graduate school. During my time at the lab, I was able to explore different sub-fields of planning, particularly food systems planning. I was also given the opportunity to become the Assistant Project Manager at the lab and continue my research on urban agricultural trends in selected NJ cities. I have to say joining the lab was one of the best decisions in my college career. Throughout my time here, I have been able to not only develop my professional skills through hands-on experience, but develop my confidence as a researcher. I’ll always be grateful for my time at the lab!

Where do you see yourself in the near future?

Nicole: In the future, I want to create sustainable, accessible environments that cultivate a sense of community and celebrate local cultures. I’m also taking the AICP exam this fall, taking the first step towards my professional planning license. Additionally, I’m excited to say that I am Monmouth County’s newest Assistant Transportation Planner! I’m very much looking forward to beginning my journey as a New Jersey planner.

What interests/hobbies do you have?

Nicole: When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my  dog, Gus. We love to walk the local trails, take car rides, and get coffee together. I also keep a small pond with large goldfish and native species of frogs. When I’m not with my animals, I like to pop on a podcast and bake. So far, I’ve made the perfect chocolate chip cookie and blondie recipes!
